For the first time in the history of the NCAA women’s basketball tournament, teams will earn money for each game played between the First Four and the Final Four, with each game earning a “unit” of television revenue. A total of 132 units worth $15 million are at stake this year, with the money being paid out to conferences and redistributed to schools over three years. This change comes after years of advocacy for equal treatment and payment for women’s teams, following a scathing gender equity assessment that highlighted disparities in treatment and payment between men’s and women’s tournaments.
