The EU’s Asylum Reform
Austria’s Chancellor Christian Stocker has called for a comprehensive overhaul of EU asylum rules, asserting they no longer serve their intended purpose and have fueled anti-immigrant sentiments. His coalition government, formed in response to the far-right Freedom Party’s electoral success, aims to address public concerns about immigration by tightening family reunification rights for refugees, despite criticism from human rights advocates about exaggerating issues. Stocker emphasizes the need for a legal framework that better serves the needs of genuine asylum seekers while improving public confidence amidst economic challenges.
