$700 million Point Mission Bay project fast-tracked by Generus Living Group

An Auckland retirement village, Eastcliffe on Kupe St in Ōrākei, is set to be demolished and replaced by a new $700 million development called The Point Mission Bay. This project, spearheaded by Graham Wilkinson, founder and owner of Generus Living Group, will feature a significantly larger structure with up to eight levels, surpassing Eastcliffe’s current three-level design. Wilkinson highlighted that the existing buildings, constructed over two decades ago, have not withstood the test of time and were built during the leaky building era, rendering them unsuitable for modern use. The new development is positioned adjacent to Ngāti Whātua’s headquarters, emphasizing a shift towards contemporary living standards in the area.

Why It Matters

The decision to replace Eastcliffe with The Point Mission Bay reflects broader trends in urban development and the need for upgraded housing solutions, particularly in Auckland, where demand for quality retirement living is rising. The leaky building crisis in New Zealand, which affected many properties built in the 1990s and early 2000s, continues to impact real estate decisions, with many older buildings being deemed unfit for purpose. The redevelopment project represents a significant investment in the local economy and aligns with the growing focus on providing modern, sustainable living options for the aging population. This transformation may also influence future urban planning and housing policies in the region.
