Seven people have died and multiple others were injured in a collision between an Algoa Bus and a minibus taxi in KwaNobuhle, Kariega, in the Eastern Cape on Monday morning. The Eastern Cape Department of Transport reported that the accident occurred when a minibus taxi, carrying workers to Kariega, allegedly made a U-turn in front of the oncoming bus, which had only the driver on board. The bus then struck the passenger side of the taxi. Emergency services attended to 18 individuals at the scene, with two sustaining serious injuries while others were treated for varying degrees of injuries. Authorities have initiated an investigation into the cause of the crash.

Why It Matters

Road safety is a significant concern in South Africa, where accidents involving public transport vehicles are common. In recent years, the country has faced high rates of traffic-related fatalities, prompting calls for stricter enforcement of road safety regulations. The Eastern Cape, in particular, has experienced numerous accidents involving taxis due to factors such as reckless driving and poor vehicle maintenance. This incident highlights ongoing challenges in ensuring the safety of public transport and the need for improved infrastructure and driver training to prevent future tragedies.
