Millions of new 10p coins featuring King Charles III’s portrait have entered circulation today, marking a significant change in UK coinage. The Royal Mint is releasing these coins to meet the rising demand for the 10p denomination. This new design showcases the King’s image on one side, while the reverse features the capercaillie bird, a nod to the King’s commitment to conservation and the natural heritage of the British Isles. A total of 600,000 coins dated 2023 and 6.5 million dated 2026 will be available, while the previous Queen Elizabeth II coins will continue to remain legal tender alongside the new ones. This launch follows the introduction of King Charles’ portrait on other denominations, including the 5p, 50p, and £1 coins since 2022.

Why It Matters

The introduction of the King Charles III 10p coin is a notable development in British currency, highlighting the transition of the monarchy following Queen Elizabeth II’s passing. The Royal Mint’s decision to produce these coins reflects both a response to public demand and an effort to minimize environmental impact by keeping older coins in circulation. The capercaillie design emphasizes the importance of biodiversity and environmental conservation, aligning with King Charles’s advocacy for these issues. With only 1% of the total currency in circulation being the new coins, they are expected to become highly collectible among the public.
