A police officer is in critical condition after being struck by a vehicle while deploying road spikes near Palmerston North. The incident occurred around 2 a.m. when a driver, initially signaled to stop on Amberley Ave, fled the scene. Although the police were not pursuing the vehicle, it later collided with the officer on Kairanga Bunnythorpe Rd. The injured officer was airlifted to Wellington Hospital for treatment, while a second officer sustained minor injuries and was treated at the scene.

Why It Matters

This incident highlights the dangers faced by law enforcement officers during traffic enforcement operations. In recent years, there has been an increase in vehicle-related injuries among police officers, emphasizing the risks associated with high-speed pursuits and roadblocks. The use of road spikes is a common tactic employed by police to safely stop fleeing vehicles, but it can pose significant hazards to officers on the ground. Understanding these risks is crucial for developing strategies to enhance officer safety during such operations.
