The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has confirmed that a Second World War bomb, which forced thousands to evacuate in Plymouth, has been detonated at sea.
A spokesperson for the MoD stated that the bomb was “detonated successfully at 9.51pm” on Friday 23 February.
The 500kg explosive device was found in a back garden on Tuesday, leading to one of the largest peacetime evacuation operations in the UK.
Approximately 30 bomb disposal specialists from the armed forces worked tirelessly to assess the condition of the bomb since its discovery in St Michael Avenue in the Keyham area of Plymouth.
