In the deadliest combat of the year in central India, at least 31 suspected Maoist rebels and two police officials were killed in a clash in Chhattisgarh state. This operation was launched based on intelligence that a large number of rebels had gathered in the Indravati area, resulting in a fierce fight in the forest. Indian soldiers have been battling Maoist rebels since 1967, with the militants demanding more jobs, land, and wealth for poor indigenous communities, leading to ongoing violence and unrest in the region.
