Protest Against Food Inspection Cuts in Canada
On February 13, members of the Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada (PIPSC) held a protest in downtown Ottawa to address concerns over potential cuts to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. PIPSC vice-president Stéphanie Fréchette warned that reductions could lead to undetected foodborne outbreaks, emphasizing the risk to public safety. With around 1,300 workers, including 500 PIPSC members, facing layoffs, the specifics of the cuts remain uncertain. PIPSC president Sean O’Reilly highlighted the dedication of public servants to ensuring Canadians’ safety, expressing concern over the loss of expertise in the agency.
