26 Meta Employees File Lawsuit Over AI-Assisted Layoffs During Leave

A group of 26 current and former Meta employees has filed a lawsuit against the company, alleging that it used artificial intelligence systems to disproportionately target employees on medical, parental, or family leave during recent layoffs. Meta plans to lay off 8,000 employees, approximately 10% of its workforce, starting in May as part of an effort to enhance efficiency and manage investments. The lawsuit claims that the AI systems, which included performance rankings and activity monitoring, did not account for employees’ protected leave status, leading to unfair layoffs of those who were on leave due to medical or family reasons. Each of the plaintiffs took protected leave and requested accommodations for disabilities, and although they have been notified of their layoffs, they remain employed until separations begin on July 22. The lawsuit argues that the layoffs violate multiple state and federal laws, including the Family and Medical Leave Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act.
