Iranian president criticizes UN response to Israeli actions in Gaza and Lebanon

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian criticized the United Nations and its Security Council during a speech at the “SCO Plus” meeting in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, highlighting their inadequate response to Israeli actions in Gaza and Lebanon. He expressed disappointment over the UN’s failure to address significant threats, labeling recent military aggressions, including those against Iran, as violations of international law. Pezeshkian emphasized Iran’s right to self-defense while advocating for diplomacy as the primary means of resolving conflicts. He pointed out that the US’s actions under the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, which was designed to facilitate negotiations, have often undermined diplomatic efforts. The SCO, which includes ten member countries, was noted as a potential platform for establishing a more equitable international order.

Why It Matters

Pezeshkian’s comments reflect ongoing tensions in the Middle East, particularly regarding the roles of the US and Israel in regional conflicts. The UN’s perceived ineffectiveness in managing international crises has been a longstanding concern, especially in areas experiencing conflict, such as Gaza and Lebanon. The Islamabad Memorandum, established to end hostilities between Iran and the US, underscores the complexities of diplomatic negotiations in a volatile geopolitical landscape. As a full member of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization since 2023, Iran’s involvement in this multilateral forum highlights its efforts to forge alliances and seek a more balanced global power structure amid shifting international dynamics.
