US Treasury imposes sanctions on Iran-linked individual and Hong Kong company

The US Treasury Department has imposed sanctions on an individual and a company linked to Iran as part of its efforts to increase pressure on Tehran. Reza Mohammad Taeedi, an Iranian national based in Dubai and the general manager of Iran’s Bank Melli in Dubai, has been added to the Office of Foreign Assets Control’s Specially Designated Nationals List. He is now subject to secondary sanctions under counterterrorism and Iran-related authorities. Additionally, the Treasury designated Kameng Trading Limited, a Hong Kong-based company established in July 2024, under an Iran-related executive order. These actions coincide with measures against Banque Misr for its alleged support of Iranian shadow-banking networks. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that these measures are aimed at severing Iran’s economic connections and restricting its access to the global financial system.

Why It Matters

The sanctions against Taeedi and Kameng Trading Limited reflect ongoing US efforts to counter Iran’s financial networks, especially its shadow-banking activities that facilitate evasion of sanctions. Historically, various sanctions have been employed against Iran since its designation as a state sponsor of terrorism in 1984. The US has consistently sought to disrupt Iran’s financial operations to impede its nuclear and military ambitions. By targeting entities that support Iran, the US aims to isolate Tehran economically and limit its influence in the region.
