Sudan’s Red Sea state Health Ministry has reported 16 fatalities from heatstroke following a significant surge in cases due to rising temperatures. As of now, there have been 160 recorded instances of heatstroke in the region. The ministry’s Director-General, Ahlam Abdel Rasoul, announced that in response to this crisis, they have established three cooling centers in densely populated areas and are preparing a facility to treat heatstroke patients. Upgrades have also been made to emergency departments and inpatient wards to help mitigate temperature effects. A central ambulance number has been designated specifically for heatstroke emergencies to enhance community health response.

Why It Matters

Sudan is currently facing extreme weather conditions, exacerbated by climate change, which has led to increased incidences of heat-related health issues. The rise in temperatures poses a significant public health risk, especially in densely populated and under-resourced areas. Historical data indicates that Sudan often experiences severe heat, particularly during the summer months, which can lead to health crises if not adequately addressed. The establishment of cooling centers and emergency response measures underscores the urgent need for public health infrastructure to adapt to the effects of climate change and protect vulnerable populations.
