Israeli government supports increase in settler violence in West Bank

Amnesty International has condemned the siege of three Palestinian families’ homes by Israeli settlers in Qusra, located southeast of Nablus in the occupied West Bank. The families have faced ongoing threats, harassment, and attacks from settlers for several months and have been confined to their homes since August 9. They are reportedly running out of food and lacking basic necessities, including water. The targeted homes are in Area B of the West Bank, which is under Palestinian administrative control and Israeli military control, as outlined in the Oslo Accords. Amnesty’s Senior Director highlighted the broader implications of these actions, calling for the international community to recognize the systematic nature of such incidents and hold Israel accountable.

Why It Matters

The situation in Qusra is emblematic of broader tensions in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, particularly regarding the expansion of Israeli settlements in the West Bank. Settler violence has been a documented issue, with numerous reports indicating a pattern of harassment and displacement of Palestinian communities. According to the Oslo Accords, Area B is intended to be under joint control, yet incidents like this raise questions about the effectiveness of Palestinian governance in these regions. The international community’s response to such events is crucial, as it may influence the ongoing dynamics of the conflict and efforts toward a resolution.
