Palestinian Red Crescent opens field hospital in Gaza for 500,000 people

The Palestine Red Crescent Society has established a field hospital in northern Gaza to support nearly half a million residents as the region’s health infrastructure continues to deteriorate due to ongoing conflict. Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Mustafa emphasized the hospital’s significance as a symbol of resilience amid a humanitarian crisis, marked by widespread destruction and shortages of medical resources. This new facility is the sixth of its kind opened by the society in Gaza and aims to address the pressing healthcare needs exacerbated by the current situation, which has resulted in over 73,000 Palestinian deaths and more than 174,000 injuries since the escalation of violence on October 8, 2023. The PRCS has also prepared 57 ambulances for deployment to Gaza, pending the lifting of Israeli restrictions on access.

Why It Matters

The establishment of the field hospital is critical given the severe impact of the ongoing conflict on Gaza’s medical facilities, with reports indicating that 90% of the infrastructure has been destroyed. The health crisis follows a significant escalation in violence, which has led to a dramatic increase in casualties and displacement among the Palestinian population. Historically, the region has faced challenges regarding healthcare access, particularly during periods of intensified conflict, making humanitarian responses vital for sustaining life and providing medical care. The international community recognizes the right to health as a fundamental human right, underscoring the importance of medical assistance in conflict zones.
