Iran security chief states Strait of Hormuz will remain closed until US demands are met

Iran’s top security official, Mohammad Bagher Zolghadr, announced that the Strait of Hormuz will remain closed until the United States alters its policies and meets a series of Iranian demands. Zolghadr outlined six conditions, including an end to military actions against Iran, the withdrawal of US forces from the region, compensation for damages from recent conflicts, and the lifting of US sanctions. He emphasized that these demands reflect the will of the Iranian people, following recent nationwide rallies. Separately, Iranian army spokesman Brig. Gen. Mohammad Akraminia stated that Iran’s control over the Strait is “irreversible,” insisting that the US must accept this reality to avoid greater costs. These statements come amid stalled negotiations over navigation rights in the strategic waterway, following a memorandum signed by Iran and the US in June that aimed to restore commercial navigation but has faced implementation challenges.

Why It Matters

The Strait of Hormuz is a critical maritime corridor for global oil transportation, with approximately 20% of the world’s oil passing through it. The ongoing tensions between Iran and the US significantly impact international trade and energy markets, as any disruption could lead to increased oil prices and economic instability. Historical conflicts in the region, particularly between Iran and the US, have often escalated into broader military confrontations, raising concerns about regional security. The current impasse in negotiations reflects the complex geopolitical dynamics at play, involving not just the US and Iran, but also regional allies and global economic interests.
