UN reports millions of children in Sudan losing access to education due to war

UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina J. Mohammed has called for an immediate end to the ongoing conflict in Sudan, which has lasted for over 1,200 days. The war has left 33 million people, more than half of Sudan’s population, in need of humanitarian aid and has severely impacted children’s education, with at least 8 million school-aged children currently out of school. The situation is particularly dire in Darfur, where nearly 75% of schools have been damaged or destroyed, and five out of six children are not attending classes. Additionally, Mohammed highlighted the severe famine affecting 4 million women and children, and the staggering displacement of nearly 9 million people within the country. The conflict, which began in April 2023 between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths and one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises.

Why It Matters

The ongoing war in Sudan has led to one of the largest displacement crises globally, with millions fleeing both internally and across borders. The conflict stems from a power struggle between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces, intensifying humanitarian needs. Historical patterns of conflict in Sudan, particularly in regions like Darfur, have consistently resulted in widespread violence, destruction of infrastructure, and severe impacts on civilian populations. The international community’s response and the need for accountability for atrocities committed during this conflict are critical to stabilizing the region and addressing the humanitarian crisis.
