Houthis claim missile strike on Saudi oil tanker in Red Sea

Yemen’s Houthi group announced on Wednesday that it successfully targeted the Saudi oil tanker Wafaa with multiple ballistic missiles in the northern Red Sea near the coast of Yanbu. Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree claimed that the missiles hit the vessel “accurately” as part of the group’s maritime blockade strategy against Saudi Arabia. This latest strike marks the eighth Saudi oil tanker attack since the blockade began on July 22. Saree stated that 29 Saudi oil tankers have either been blocked from passing through the Red Sea and Arabian Sea or forced to turn back due to the group’s actions. He asserted that Saudi Arabia had rerouted its oil tankers to the northern Red Sea as a result of the Houthi blockade from the Bab al-Mandab Strait and warned that the group would continue to escalate attacks on Saudi oil tankers, regardless of the repercussions. There has been no immediate response from Saudi authorities regarding these claims.

Why It Matters

The Houthi attacks on Saudi oil tankers are significant as they highlight ongoing tensions in the region, particularly concerning maritime security and the global oil supply. The Bab al-Mandab Strait is a crucial shipping route for oil trade, and any disruption can have far-reaching implications for global markets. Since the outbreak of the Yemeni civil war in 2014, the Houthis have increasingly targeted Saudi interests, which has led to a cycle of retaliatory attacks and further destabilization in the region. The situation underscores the complexities of the conflict, which involves multiple stakeholders and has significant geopolitical ramifications.
