Syrian Airlines to begin direct flights from Damascus to Moscow on August 16

Syrian Airlines is set to launch regular direct flights between Damascus and Moscow beginning August 16, following an announcement by Syria’s General Authority of Civil Aviation and Air Transport. This new route aims to strengthen air connections between the two capitals, as Syria continues to recover its international flight operations after years of disruption. The initiative comes shortly after Saudi carrier Flynas commenced direct flights between Riyadh and Aleppo, and German airlines LEAV Aviation and Sundair also announced plans to resume services to Syria. Since May, the number of airlines operating flights to and from Syria has increased to 12, with Türkiye also reinstating regular flights. The restoration of these services follows significant declines in air traffic over Syria after 2012 due to its security situation and the designation of its airspace as a high-risk zone.

Why It Matters

The resumption of international flights to and from Syria is a critical development following the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad’s government in December 2024. The country has faced a prolonged period of isolation due to ongoing conflict and security concerns, which severely impacted its aviation sector. The increase in airline operations indicates a gradual normalization of the situation and reflects broader geopolitical shifts in the region. By restoring air connectivity, Syria aims to enhance economic activities, tourism, and international relations, contributing to the country’s recovery and reintegration into the global community.
