Israeli attacks result in 18 Palestinian deaths during ceasefire

Israeli airstrikes across the Gaza Strip on Sunday resulted in the deaths of at least 18 Palestinians, including three children and an unborn baby. The assaults occurred shortly after an agreement was announced by US President Donald Trump and the Board of Peace to advance a ceasefire that had been in place since October 10, 2025. Among those killed were a family of three in Khan Younis and two individuals in central Gaza struck by a helicopter. Additional casualties included a child and several injuries from strikes targeting a tent sheltering displaced individuals in Gaza City. Despite the ceasefire, which has seen numerous violations, Palestinians assert that ongoing Israeli attacks and humanitarian restrictions exacerbate their crisis, with over 1,230 Palestinians reported killed since the ceasefire began.

Why It Matters

The ongoing violence in Gaza is rooted in a prolonged conflict that has seen significant casualties and humanitarian crises. Since the start of a major military offensive by Israel on October 8, 2023, over 73,000 Palestinians have been killed, and reconstruction costs have been estimated at $70 billion. The ceasefire that began in October 2025 has been marked by numerous ceasefire violations, further complicating efforts for peace. The international community has been closely monitoring the situation, as continued hostilities hinder humanitarian aid and exacerbate the already dire conditions faced by civilians in the region.
