UN warns of public health risks in Gaza as displacement sites report infestations

The United Nations has warned of significant public health risks in the Gaza Strip, highlighting that 83% of assessed displacement sites are infested with rodents and ectoparasites. UN spokesperson Farhan Haq stated that these infestations occur alongside poor sanitation conditions, including sewage in streets and stagnant water. Humanitarian efforts are being intensified to control rodent populations. Access to critical supplies, such as spare parts and engine oil, is urgently needed to mitigate these risks, and humanitarian partners require unhindered access to landfills, as approximately 65% of Gaza is restricted by Israeli forces. The ongoing conflict, which escalated on October 8, 2023, has resulted in over 73,000 Palestinian deaths and 174,000 injuries, with a continued humanitarian crisis despite a ceasefire that began on October 10, 2025.

Why It Matters

The situation in Gaza is exacerbated by prolonged conflict and restrictions on humanitarian access, which hinder efforts to address public health risks. The ongoing violence since October 2023 has led to a severe deterioration in living conditions, affecting access to water, sanitation, and healthcare. Historical tensions between Israel and Palestine, coupled with recent escalations, have created a complex humanitarian crisis that continues to impact civilians, particularly vulnerable populations such as women and children. The UN’s warning reflects the urgent need for international attention and intervention to prevent further health crises in the region.
