Israeli airstrike hits mosque and displaces residents in Gaza City

An Israeli airstrike on Tuesday destroyed the Al-Muttaqin Mosque and tents sheltering displaced Palestinians in central Gaza City, leaving hundreds of individuals homeless. The strike, executed by Israeli fighter jets, resulted in the complete destruction of the mosque and significant damage to nearby homes and civilian property. The tents that were destroyed were providing temporary shelter to families who had already lost their homes due to prior Israeli attacks. This incident occurred amidst ongoing military operations in Gaza despite a ceasefire agreement established on October 10, 2025. Since the onset of Israel’s military offensive on October 8, 2023, Palestinian authorities report over 73,000 fatalities and extensive destruction of civilian infrastructure.

Why It Matters

The destruction of infrastructure in Gaza, including mosques and shelters for displaced individuals, highlights the humanitarian crisis faced by Palestinians. As of July 2, Gaza’s Ministry of Endowments and Religious Affairs indicated that approximately 1,050 mosques had been completely destroyed, with 191 partially damaged, exacerbating the impact of the conflict on religious and community life. The ongoing military actions contribute to a deteriorating humanitarian situation, where 90% of Gaza’s civilian infrastructure has been reported as destroyed since the conflict escalation in October 2023. This situation raises significant concerns regarding the living conditions of civilians in the region and the broader implications for peace and stability in the area.
