Israeli army detains staff during raid on UNRWA training center

Israeli forces conducted a raid on the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) Training Center located in the Qalandia refugee camp, north of occupied East Jerusalem, detaining staff on-site. The Jerusalem Governorate reported that the Israeli soldiers stormed the center, deploying tear gas and holding teaching and administrative staff in one of the halls. This operation followed a prior raid on the camp where Israeli forces used stun grenades and tear gas, leading to fires in the area. The raid occurred approximately six weeks after warnings from the governorate about an Israeli plan to demolish the training center, which serves around 350 students aged 15 to 19. The center was established on land provided by the Jordanian government prior to Israel’s occupation of the West Bank in 1967.

Why It Matters

The situation in Qalandia reflects ongoing tensions surrounding Israeli policies in East Jerusalem and the West Bank, where demolitions of Palestinian structures have increased. In the first half of 2023, Israeli authorities reportedly demolished 341 buildings, affecting nearly 1,000 Palestinians. The UNRWA training center symbolizes the international community’s role in providing education and support to Palestinians, and its proposed demolition aligns with broader Israeli efforts to alter the demographic and cultural landscape of East Jerusalem. Such actions have raised international concerns over the potential impacts on Palestinian institutions and rights.
