Chickenpox infections increase among displaced children in Gaza

Chickenpox cases among displaced Palestinian children in the Gaza Strip have surged, with approximately 9,300 cases reported in the last two weeks, primarily in Khan Younis. The United Nations attributed this rise to overcrowded living conditions, insufficient clean water, and failing sewage infrastructure, which are exacerbating the spread of infectious diseases in displacement camps. The UN’s Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs noted that acute respiratory and skin diseases are the most prevalent health issues in Gaza. Additionally, more than 18,000 new cases of chickenpox, external parasite infestations, and bacterial skin infections were reported last week. The ongoing conflict has severely damaged Gaza’s healthcare system, leading to profound shortages of medical resources, while the death toll from the conflict has reached at least 73,250, with significant destruction of civilian infrastructure.

Why It Matters

The rise in infectious diseases like chickenpox in Gaza underscores the severe humanitarian crisis exacerbated by ongoing conflict and blockade conditions. Since the escalation of hostilities in October 2023, the health and living conditions in Gaza have deteriorated drastically, with the UN highlighting a collapse in basic services. The destruction of medical facilities and shortages of essential supplies have rendered the population vulnerable to outbreaks of preventable diseases. Continued violations of ceasefire agreements have further complicated relief efforts, leading to long-term implications for public health and safety in the region.
