Qatar’s former Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani passed away on Sunday morning at the age of 74, as announced by the Amiri Diwan. The statement expressed condolences, wishing him God’s mercy and forgiveness. In response to his death, Qatar declared four days of national mourning starting immediately. Funeral prayers are scheduled to take place after the Maghrib prayer at the Imam Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab Mosque in Doha, with burial at Lusail Cemetery. Beginning Monday, current Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani will receive condolences from state leaders, the ruling family, and citizens at Lusail Palace until Wednesday.

Why It Matters

Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani served as Qatar’s ruler from 1995 until his abdication in 2013, during which he significantly modernized the country and expanded its global influence. His leadership marked a pivotal shift in Qatar’s foreign policy, particularly in fostering relationships with Western nations and supporting various regional uprisings during the Arab Spring. The emir’s tenure also saw substantial investments in education, healthcare, and infrastructure, contributing to Qatar’s economic diversification. His passing is expected to influence the political landscape in Qatar, given his prominent role in shaping the nation’s contemporary identity.
