Thousands celebrated in Damazin, the capital of Sudan’s Blue Nile State, following the army’s announcement of regaining control over the strategic town of Kurmuk from the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N). Residents filled the streets, voicing support for the Sudanese Armed Forces while vehicles honked in jubilation, marking what they termed a significant victory. Blue Nile State Governor Ahmed Al-Omda and Fourth Infantry Division Commander Major General Ismail Al-Tayeb joined the celebrations, receiving a warm welcome from crowds. Al-Omda praised the recapture as a “major victory” and congratulated the armed forces for liberating the town. Kurmuk’s governor, Abdel Ati Mohamed Al-Faki, indicated that plans were underway for residents to return and for the rehabilitation of the town’s damaged infrastructure and public services.

Why It Matters

The recapture of Kurmuk is significant as it highlights ongoing military confrontations in Sudan, particularly between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the RSF, which have been pivotal in the country’s recent conflicts. The Blue Nile region has historically been a site of contention, with various armed groups vying for control and influence. The victory may impact the stability of the area and the broader dynamics of power among different factions in Sudan. Additionally, the rebuilding efforts planned for Kurmuk reflect the urgent need for recovery in regions affected by prolonged violence, emphasizing the challenges of restoring order and services in post-conflict environments.
