A prisoner advocacy group has called for urgent intervention to secure the release of three pregnant Palestinian women held at Damon Prison in Israel under harsh conditions. The Palestinian Prisoner Society claims that Amina al-Taweel, Dana Jouda, and Manar Ibrahim are among 93 Palestinian women currently imprisoned, facing severe isolation and denied family visits. Al-Taweel, 37, is four months pregnant; Jouda, 35, is five months pregnant; and Ibrahim, 28, is four months pregnant. Since the onset of Israel’s conflict in Gaza in October 2023, over 765 Palestinian women have been arrested, amid reports of mistreatment and poor conditions in Israeli prisons where many detainees face torture and neglect. The ongoing conflict has resulted in significant casualties, with more than 73,000 Palestinians reported killed and over 173,000 injured.
Why It Matters
The situation highlights ongoing concerns regarding the treatment of Palestinian detainees in Israeli prisons, particularly women and those who are pregnant. Since the beginning of the war in Gaza, Israeli authorities have faced international scrutiny over their detention practices, with allegations of increased punitive measures against prisoners. Historical tensions between Israel and Palestine have led to cycles of violence and unrest, exacerbating humanitarian issues within the region. The high number of arrests and reported mistreatment underscores the broader implications of the conflict on civil rights and humanitarian conditions.
