Hezbollah rejects Israel’s freedom to operate amid Lebanon ceasefire

Hezbollah Secretary-General Naim Qassem has firmly rejected any ceasefire that would allow Israel to continue its military operations in Lebanon. In a televised address, Qassem stated that a ceasefire cannot permit Israel to act freely, labeling such a situation as a continuation of aggression. He emphasized that any ceasefire must involve a complete halt to all forms of Israeli aggression and military presence in Lebanon. Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed that the Israeli army would not withdraw from occupied territories in southern Lebanon, despite calls for respecting Lebanon’s sovereignty. Recent Israeli airstrikes have reportedly resulted in significant casualties, with over 100 people killed and many more injured, amid claims that the strikes targeted Hezbollah positions. Since the onset of hostilities on March 2, Israeli attacks in Lebanon have resulted in over 4,100 deaths and more than 12,000 injuries.

Why It Matters

This ongoing conflict highlights the longstanding tensions between Israel and Hezbollah, a militant group based in Lebanon. The current hostilities have roots in territorial disputes and historical grievances that date back decades, including the Israeli occupation of parts of southern Lebanon since the 1980s. The conflict has significant humanitarian implications, as civilian casualties and infrastructure damage continue to escalate amid military operations. The dynamics of regional power, particularly involving Iran’s influence through Hezbollah, further complicate the situation, making it a focal point for broader Middle Eastern geopolitics.
