Arab and Islamic states oppose Somaliland’s reported plans for representation in Jerusalem

Fifteen Arab and Islamic countries have jointly condemned the self-declared Somaliland’s intention to establish a “so-called embassy” in occupied Jerusalem, labeling the act a “flagrant violation” of international law and United Nations resolutions. The foreign ministers from Egypt, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Jordan, Pakistan, Indonesia, Djibouti, Somalia, Palestine, Oman, Sudan, Yemen, Lebanon, and Mauritania issued a statement denouncing Somaliland’s unilateral action, which lacks international recognition as a sovereign nation. They asserted that opening a diplomatic mission in Jerusalem would undermine the city’s legal and historical status. The countries affirmed their commitment to opposing any actions that attempt to alter the realities in occupied Jerusalem and reiterated that East Jerusalem remains occupied Palestinian territory, rendering any changes to its status “null and void.” Furthermore, they expressed full support for Somalia’s unity and territorial integrity.

Why It Matters

The condemnation from these fifteen countries reflects ongoing tensions surrounding the status of Jerusalem and the broader Israeli-Palestinian conflict. East Jerusalem has been considered occupied territory by the international community since the 1967 Six-Day War, and efforts to change its status have historically sparked widespread backlash. Somaliland’s push for recognition and diplomatic presence in Jerusalem highlights the complexities of statehood and international relations, especially for territories seeking independence without broad recognition. This situation underscores the delicate balance of geopolitical interests in the region and the importance of adhering to established international legal frameworks regarding sovereignty and territory.
