Denmark criticizes Israel’s treatment of Gaza flotilla detainees

Denmark has expressed concern regarding the treatment of detainees from a Gaza flotilla mission, following the release of footage by Israel’s National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir. The video reportedly shows activists zip-tied and made to kneel after their detention by Israeli forces in international waters. Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen emphasized the importance of treating detainees with respect and upholding their rights. The Global Sumud humanitarian aid flotilla, which consisted of 50 vessels and 428 people from 44 countries, was intercepted by Israel while attempting to break the blockade on Gaza. Although a ceasefire was established on October 10, 2025, the situation in Gaza remains dire, with continued Israeli attacks resulting in significant casualties and injuries.

Why It Matters

The ongoing conflict in Gaza has resulted in severe humanitarian crises, with Israel’s blockade in place since 2007 exacerbating the situation. Since the ceasefire in October 2025, Gaza’s Health Ministry has reported at least 881 deaths and over 2,600 injuries due to ongoing violence, highlighting the precarious nature of the ceasefire. The two-year war prior to the ceasefire led to over 72,000 fatalities, predominantly women and children, and significant destruction of civilian infrastructure. The international community’s response, including Denmark’s condemnation of the treatment of detainees, reflects growing concerns over human rights and the humanitarian impact of the conflict.
