Pakistani and Egyptian diplomats discuss regional situation amid Middle East conflict

Pakistani Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty engaged in a phone call on Sunday to discuss the changing regional dynamics amid the ongoing Mideast conflict. During the conversation, Abdelatty praised Pakistan’s commitment to fostering regional peace and stability. They also addressed the regional consultative forum involving Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Turkiye, and Egypt, focusing on their collaborative efforts at the UN Security Council and other diplomatic initiatives. Additionally, Abdelatty acknowledged Pakistan’s role in facilitating the repatriation of 20 Iranian and 11 Pakistani seafarers from Singapore, who had been on vessels seized by the United States. Both ministers agreed to maintain close communication on regional and international issues, with Abdelatty inviting Dar for further discussions in Egypt.

Why It Matters

This dialogue reflects the increasing efforts by regional powers to address growing tensions in the Middle East, particularly since the escalation of hostilities involving the US, Israel, and Iran. The conflict intensified after the February strikes by the US and Israel against Iran, leading to retaliatory actions from Tehran and heightened instability in the Gulf region. The situation has implications for global energy security, especially regarding the closure of key maritime routes like the Strait of Hormuz, through which a significant percentage of the world’s oil supply passes. Additionally, various countries in the region, including Pakistan and Egypt, are seeking to play active roles in mediation and diplomatic discussions to secure peace and stability.
