Turkish Football Federation president declines meeting with Israeli counterpart

Turkish Football Federation (TFF) President Ibrahim Haciosmanoglu announced on Tuesday his refusal to meet Moshe Zuares, the head of the Israeli Football Association, in light of the ongoing conflict in Gaza. Haciosmanoglu emphasized Turkey’s strong ties with Spain, particularly regarding their mutual stance on Palestinian issues, claiming that Spain would boycott the 2026 FIFA World Cup if Israel were to participate. He expressed solidarity with oppressed peoples and criticized the international community’s response to violence, citing the expulsion of Russia from various sports organizations as an example. Last September, he called upon FIFA, UEFA, and national football federations to ban Israel from international sporting events. The military actions in Gaza have resulted in over 72,000 Palestinian deaths and more than 172,000 injuries since October 2023.

Why It Matters

The conflict in Gaza has escalated significantly, with extensive casualties reported, particularly among women and children. The international sports community’s response to political and humanitarian crises has been a contentious issue, as seen in the expulsion of Russia from various sporting events following its invasion of Ukraine. Haciosmanoglu’s actions and statements reflect broader geopolitical tensions and the influence of national identity and solidarity in sports. The ongoing violence in Gaza and its implications for international relations continue to affect diplomatic stances, particularly among nations with historical ties to the Palestinian cause.
