Iran threatens 90% uranium enrichment if attacked by US or Israel

Iran has issued a warning regarding its potential response to renewed military actions by the United States and Israel, stating that it could increase uranium enrichment to 90%. Ebrahim Rezaei, a spokesperson for Iran’s parliament’s Foreign Policy and National Security Committee, made the announcement via social media platform X. This statement follows heightened tensions in the region after US and Israeli airstrikes against Iran on February 28. Iran retaliated by targeting Israel and its allies in the Gulf, as well as closing the strategic Strait of Hormuz. Although a ceasefire was established on April 8 through mediation from Pakistan, subsequent talks have failed to yield a long-term resolution. Recently, Iran submitted a response to a US proposal aimed at ending hostilities, but the offer was rejected by President Donald Trump as “totally unacceptable.”

Why It Matters

This situation is significant as it highlights the escalating conflict between Iran and Western powers, particularly the US and Israel. The potential for Iran to enrich uranium to 90% raises concerns about nuclear proliferation, as this level is near weapons-grade. The historical context of tensions in the region includes previous military engagements, sanctions, and negotiations surrounding Iran’s nuclear program. The closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical shipping lane for global oil supplies, underscores the broader economic implications of the conflict. The failure of diplomatic efforts to establish a lasting ceasefire further exacerbates regional instability and heightens the risk of direct military confrontation.
