US condemns attack on Khartoum airport and calls for Sudan truce

The United States has condemned a recent drone attack on Khartoum Airport and other civilian locations in Sudan, which is reportedly attributed to the Rapid Support Forces. Senior adviser to the US President on Arab and African affairs, Massad Boulos, emphasized that such strikes impede essential humanitarian access and must cease. He reiterated the importance of civilian sites, particularly airports, for the delivery of humanitarian aid and called for a humanitarian truce and permanent ceasefire among the conflicting parties. Boulos stressed that a military solution is not viable for resolving the ongoing conflict in Sudan. Efforts led by the US, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and the United Arab Emirates have been ongoing to establish a humanitarian truce in the region.

Why It Matters

Sudan has been embroiled in conflict since April 2023, following a power struggle between rival military factions. The ongoing violence has resulted in widespread humanitarian crises, displacing millions and obstructing aid deliveries. International efforts have aimed to facilitate humanitarian access and establish a stable government through inclusive dialogue. With ongoing attacks on civilian infrastructure, the situation remains critical, highlighting the urgent need for ceasefire agreements and protective measures for civilians amidst the conflict.
