Iran reports removal of verification badges from foreign ministry accounts

Iran’s Foreign Ministry has accused the US social media platform X of “selective censorship” after it removed verification badges from accounts associated with the ministry, including its spokesperson and the foreign minister. The ministry’s spokesman, Esmaeil Baghaei, stated that the removal of the blue check marks, despite the accounts holding Premium+ subscriptions, is an “arbitrary de-verification.” Iran claims this action is part of a broader effort to suppress information regarding the ongoing US-Iran conflict. As of now, X has not publicly responded to these allegations.

Why It Matters

The removal of verification badges from Iranian officials’ accounts on X adds to concerns about censorship and the control of information in digital platforms, especially regarding international conflicts. The US and Iran have a long-standing adversarial relationship, marked by tensions over nuclear programs and regional influence. Social media has become a pivotal battleground for narratives in this conflict, as both sides seek to influence public perception. The action taken by X may reflect broader geopolitical dynamics and raises questions about the role of private companies in moderating content related to state actors.
