Israel’s government has approved a budget of approximately $270 million for the construction of roads connecting illegal settlements in the occupied West Bank. The approval, made by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s administration, allocates over 1 billion shekels for this project. Initially, around 3 million shekels will be designated for planning and design work, with plans expected to be submitted for government approval within 45 days. The specific locations for the new roads have not been disclosed. This decision follows a notable increase in settlement activities since Netanyahu’s government took office in late 2022, with around 750,000 Israeli settlers currently residing in the West Bank, including approximately 250,000 in East Jerusalem. Palestinian sources report that Israeli forces have killed at least 1,155 Palestinians and injured about 11,750 in the West Bank since October 2023.
Why It Matters
The expansion of illegal settlements in the West Bank is a contentious issue that has significant implications for Israeli-Palestinian relations. As of July 2024, the International Court of Justice ruled that Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territories is illegal and called for the evacuation of all settlements. The continued construction of roads and settlements contributes to tensions and violence in the region, as well as to the displacement of Palestinian communities. Current estimates indicate a substantial portion of the population in the West Bank and East Jerusalem lives under occupation, highlighting the ongoing humanitarian and political challenges in the area.
