A member of the Knesset from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud party has made controversial comments regarding the Egyptian military’s planned drills in the Sinai Peninsula. Amit Halevi expressed concern over the exercises occurring just 100 meters from the Israeli border, alleging they reflect a broader security threat. He accused Egypt of violating its peace treaty with Israel by allegedly building combat infrastructure and strengthening its military capabilities in Sinai. Halevi urged the Israeli army to adapt its strategy along the southern front and to respond firmly to what he termed violations. His remarks come amid heightened tensions since the events of October 7, 2023. There has been no official response from the Egyptian military regarding these accusations or the drills taking place.
Why It Matters
The peace treaty between Egypt and Israel, signed in 1979, has established a framework for military presence and cooperation in the region. Egyptian military drills in Sinai are generally viewed as standard exercises under the terms of this treaty, which limits military activity to maintain peace. However, rising rhetoric from Israeli officials suggests growing concerns about Egypt’s military capabilities, which some perceive as a potential threat to Israeli security. This situation is complicated by recent escalations in regional tensions and the historical context of military cooperation and conflict between the two nations.
