Seven people were killed and 22 others injured in a drone attack by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on El Obeid in North Kordofan, as reported by the Sudan Doctors Network. The attack involved the use of “suicide drones” targeting residential neighborhoods, leading to significant civilian casualties. The Sudan Doctors Network condemned the assault, stating that it appeared aimed at maximizing civilian harm rather than achieving military objectives. They characterized this incident as a serious violation of international humanitarian law, highlighting the increasing disregard for civilian lives amid worsening humanitarian conditions in Sudan.
Why It Matters
The ongoing conflict in Sudan, particularly between the Sudanese army and the RSF, has resulted in a severe humanitarian crisis, exacerbated by attacks on civilian areas. Since the outbreak of hostilities in 2023, thousands have died, and millions have been displaced, leading to critical shortages of food, medical supplies, and shelter. The international community has expressed growing concern over the targeting of civilians and the use of indiscriminate weaponry, which complicates efforts to provide humanitarian assistance. The RSF’s tactics reflect a broader pattern of violence that undermines peace and stability in the region, emphasizing the urgent need for a ceasefire and renewed diplomatic efforts.
