Gaza attacks increase by 46% in weekly surge since ceasefire

The UN reported a significant increase in violence in the Gaza Strip, with incidents such as gunfire, shelling, and airstrikes rising by 46% from April 12 to April 18, marking the highest levels since the ceasefire on October 10, 2025. Spokesperson Stephane Dujarric highlighted that the northern regions of Gaza experienced the most pronounced escalations. Additionally, humanitarian efforts are being hampered by restrictions on necessary equipment for addressing unexploded ordnance. Since the ceasefire, Israeli forces have committed approximately 2,400 violations, resulting in 777 Palestinian deaths and 2,193 injuries, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry. This surge in violence follows a prolonged conflict that began in October 2023, leading to over 72,000 Palestinian deaths and the destruction of much of Gaza’s infrastructure.

Why It Matters

The ongoing violence in Gaza and the West Bank continues to impact civilian lives severely. Since the October 2023 conflict, Israel has faced scrutiny for its actions as the occupying power, with international laws mandating the protection of civilians. The UN has documented over 500 attacks by Israeli settlers in the West Bank this year alone, highlighting the broader security challenges in the region. With humanitarian responses limited by restrictions, the situation is critical for the recovery and stability of Gaza, underscoring the need for comprehensive international attention and intervention.
