US military completes transfer of major bases in Syria

The US has completed the transfer of all significant military bases in Syria, as announced by US Central Command (CENTCOM). The handover is part of a planned transition by the Combined Joint Task Force – Operation Inherent Resolve. Despite the base closures, US forces will continue to support local partners in counterterrorism operations, which are deemed crucial for maintaining the defeat of ISIS and enhancing regional security. The Syrian Foreign Affairs Ministry welcomed the completion of the handover, stating it reflects the Syrian government’s efforts to restore authority over previously uncontrollable areas, including the northeast and border regions. The ministry also noted that the move signifies the successful integration of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) into national security structures, with the Syrian state assuming full responsibility for addressing regional threats.

Why It Matters

The transfer of military bases from US forces to the Syrian government is significant as it indicates a shift in control over strategic areas, particularly in the northeast where the SDF has operated. This development follows a comprehensive agreement between the Syrian government and the SDF aimed at reconciling divisions within the country. The handover aligns with Syria’s broader strategy to consolidate state authority and enhance national security amidst ongoing challenges posed by ISIS and other militant groups. The transition marks a critical phase in Syria’s complex political landscape and reflects changing dynamics in international military presence in the region.
