China calls for stable transit and respect for Iran’s rights in Strait of Hormuz

China has called for the respect of Iran’s rights as a coastal state of the Strait of Hormuz while emphasizing the need for safe and free navigation through the strategic waterway amid ongoing tensions with the US. In a phone conversation with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi highlighted the importance of maintaining ceasefire momentum and advancing peace talks that align with the fundamental interests of the Iranian populace. He reiterated that Iran’s sovereignty and legitimate interests should be upheld but stressed the necessity of ensuring navigation safety in the strait. The call for restored normal transit comes as the US has implemented a blockade of Iranian ports, disrupting global shipping since the recent escalation of conflict, which began on February 28. A two-week ceasefire, mediated by Pakistan, is currently in effect as diplomatic efforts continue to resolve the situation.

Why It Matters

The Strait of Hormuz is a critical chokepoint for global oil shipments, with approximately one-fifth of the world’s oil passing through it. The ongoing conflict involving the US and Iran has led to significant disruptions in maritime activities, raising concerns about global energy security. The region’s stability is further complicated by the involvement of multiple nations and ongoing diplomatic negotiations, such as those facilitated by Pakistan aimed at fostering dialogue between the US and Iran. Understanding these dynamics is essential for grasping the broader implications of tensions in the Middle East, particularly regarding international trade and regional security.
