UN experts call for cessation of attacks on Gaza shelters and displacement in West Bank

A group of UN experts has expressed grave concern regarding Israeli military operations impacting displaced Palestinian civilians in Gaza and a rise in forced displacements in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem. They stated that these actions aim to make life intolerable for Palestinians, effectively leading to their expulsion from their land. The experts highlighted incidents such as a March 11 strike in Gaza that ignited fires in tents housing displaced persons and a March 8 shelling that resulted in multiple fatalities and injuries. They noted that in 2025, over 36,000 Palestinians faced forced displacement in the West Bank due to illegal Israeli settlements. The UN experts condemned the ongoing evictions and demolitions, asserting that these practices constitute ethnic cleansing and violate international humanitarian law. They urged Israel to halt forcible transfers and ensure humanitarian access for affected communities.

Why It Matters

The ongoing conflict between Israel and the Palestinians has historically been marked by cycles of violence, displacement, and settlement expansion. Since 1967, Israeli settlements in occupied territories have increased significantly, often resulting in the displacement of Palestinian communities. According to UN data, around 92 percent of housing in Gaza has been affected by destruction or damage, contributing to a humanitarian crisis. The continued pattern of forced displacement and military actions raises serious concerns about the adherence to international law and the protection of civilians, particularly in light of the Geneva Conventions, which prohibit forced transfer of populations in occupied territories.
