Lebanon reports 35 deaths from Israeli attacks in 24 hours, total rises to 2,055

Lebanon’s Health Ministry reported on Sunday that Israeli airstrikes over the last 24 hours resulted in 35 fatalities and 152 injuries, increasing the total death toll since March 2 to 2,055, with 6,588 injured. Among the deceased are 252 women and 165 children, while injuries include 1,120 among women and 644 among children. The Israeli military has intensified its bombardment of Lebanon following a cross-border attack by Hezbollah on March 2, which escalated regional tensions in the wake of a US-Israeli operation against Iran. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated on Saturday that attacks would continue until Hezbollah is disarmed and a lasting peace agreement is established. Meanwhile, Lebanon’s presidency announced a meeting between representatives of Beirut and Tel Aviv in Washington on April 14, which Hezbollah has condemned.

Why It Matters

The ongoing conflict is rooted in longstanding tensions between Israel and Hezbollah, a Lebanese militant group supported by Iran. Since the escalation began, Lebanon has experienced significant civilian casualties and injuries, highlighting the humanitarian impact of the conflict. Historical patterns show that military actions often lead to retaliatory strikes, contributing to a cycle of violence that affects regional stability. The upcoming meeting in Washington represents a potential diplomatic effort amidst this turmoil, but the parties remain deeply divided, complicating any prospects for lasting peace.
