UAE warns against targeting Iranian energy facilities as escalation risk

The United Arab Emirates has expressed grave concerns over recent attacks on energy facilities linked to Iran’s South Pars gas field, labeling these actions a “dangerous escalation” that jeopardizes global energy security and regional stability. The UAE Foreign Ministry emphasized that the infrastructure associated with the South Pars field, which extends into Qatar’s North Field, is vital for global energy supplies. It cautioned that strikes on this infrastructure could lead to serious environmental issues and threaten civilian safety, maritime security, and critical facilities. This warning follows Iranian media reports of a US-Israeli airstrike on gas storage tanks at the South Pars field, which has halted production at two refineries. Since February 28, the US and Israel have conducted a joint military campaign against Iran that has resulted in significant casualties, while Iran has retaliated with missile and drone strikes targeting various countries, including Israel and Gulf nations.

Why It Matters

The South Pars gas field is one of the largest gas fields in the world, shared by Iran and Qatar, and is crucial for both countries’ economies. Disruptions in this area can significantly impact global energy markets, especially given the ongoing tensions in the region. The US-Israel military campaign against Iran follows a history of geopolitical conflicts in the Middle East, where energy resources often become focal points for military and diplomatic disputes. The escalation of attacks could further destabilize the region, affecting not only energy supplies but also international trade and security dynamics among neighboring countries.
