It is early to assess defensive back prospects for the 2026 NFL Draft, but the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are focusing on players who exhibit length, versatility, and ball production. General manager Jason Licht emphasizes the need for defensive backs who can disrupt passing lanes and force turnovers. The team values players who can function in various alignments while maintaining physicality and awareness. Although immediate starters are not a primary goal, acquiring instinctive defensive backs remains a crucial focus. One player under consideration is Maryland’s Jalen Huskey, a 6-foot-2, 201-pound senior who had a productive season in 2025, recording 72 tackles, four interceptions, and earning Second Team All-Big Ten honors. His experience, strong ball skills, and leadership make him an intriguing candidate for the Buccaneers as they prepare for the draft.
Why It Matters
The evaluation of Jalen Huskey is significant as defensive backs play a key role in modern NFL defenses, particularly in pass-heavy offenses. The Buccaneers’ strategy, which relies on versatile secondary players, reflects broader trends in the league that prioritize players capable of adapting to multiple roles. Huskey’s performance at Maryland, including his contributions to a defense that achieved its highest interception total in over a decade, highlights his potential impact at the professional level. Historically, teams that invest in versatile defensive backs have seen success in mitigating the effectiveness of opposing offenses, making such evaluations critical in the scouting process.
