Iraqi PM and UN Chief Confirm Ongoing Partnership After UNAMI Mission Ends

Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres reaffirmed their partnership during Guterres’ visit to Baghdad for the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq’s (UNAMI) mandate conclusion after 22 years. Sudani emphasized Iraq’s achievements against terrorism and the ongoing significance of its relationship with the UN. Guterres commended Iraq’s transformation and stability, highlighting the country’s commitment to repatriating citizens from the al-Hol camp in Syria. Additionally, he proposed former Iraqi President Barham Salih as the next UN high commissioner for refugees.
