Spain and Morocco Hold Summit on Western Sahara

Spain and Morocco held a high-level meeting in Madrid to strengthen bilateral ties, despite tensions in Spain’s coalition government regarding the Western Sahara issue. The summit resulted in 14 cooperation agreements, emphasizing their strong economic relationship, which saw trade reach €22.6 billion in 2024. While Spain’s government supports Morocco’s autonomy plan for the region, coalition partner Sumar opposes it, and the Polisario Front has raised concerns about Morocco’s ambitions. Leaders highlighted further collaboration opportunities, including co-hosting the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
