What You Need to Know
• Cyclospora cases linked to iceberg lettuce have been reported in 15 states, according to U.S. health officials.
• The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed a rise in states affected, now totaling 15.
• Taylor Farms has recalled iceberg lettuce grown in central Mexico amid the ongoing outbreak investigation.

U.S. health officials announced that cases of the parasitic illness Cyclospora have been linked to iceberg lettuce in 15 states as of Wednesday. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that the number of states associated with the outbreak increased from nine to 15, with Arkansas, Iowa, Missouri, Nebraska, New Hampshire, and North Carolina being the latest additions. Investigators initially focused on lettuce served at Taco Bell but later identified Taylor Farms as the source of the contaminated lettuce, prompting a recall of iceberg lettuce produced in central Mexico. This year, Cyclospora cases have been reported in at least 47 states, with Michigan alone accounting for over 12,000 cases, including two deaths, contributing to a national total exceeding 25,000 cases.

Why It Matters

The outbreak of Cyclospora is significant due to its widespread impact across multiple states and the challenges in tracing its source. Cyclospora infections are typically difficult to investigate, as symptoms can take weeks to appear, complicating the identification of common exposures. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that outbreaks often occur in late spring and summer, with the worst year for infections in the U.S. being 2019, when approximately 4,700 cases were reported. This year’s total has already surpassed that figure, highlighting the severity of the current outbreak and the strain it places on public health resources.
