The Indian Union cabinet has approved the SHANTI Bill, aimed at reforming the country’s nuclear sector by amending the Atomic Energy Act of 1962, facilitating private and foreign investment while easing liability concerns stemming from the Indo-US Nuclear Deal. This legislation is expected to enhance regulatory clarity, consolidate existing laws, and boost India’s nuclear power capacity from 8.78 GW to 22.38 GW by 2031-32. The bill will allow private players to hold up to 49% equity, breaking the government monopoly and fostering international cooperation in reactor construction. Additionally, the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre is developing small modular reactors for diverse applications, further advancing India’s nuclear energy goals.
