Govt targeting 2034 to hold 1st 'one nation, one election'

India plans to conduct nationwide simultaneous elections by 2034, pending a constitutional amendment. To align state assemblies with the 2034 general elections, those elected after 2029 will serve shorter terms. A joint parliamentary committee is currently reviewing the ‘one nation, one election’ bill, which may extend its tenure to visit states and collect feedback before finalizing its recommendations.
